In honor of Dia de los Muertos and my best friend Selina coming to visit me at school this weekend, we had a fun themed photo shoot with the very talented Warren Marshall.Dia de los Muertos – or Day of the Dead in English – celebrates the lives of loved ones and focuses on reuniting the souls of loved ones who have passed with the living. It is said the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31st – allowing the souls of children and babies to be reunited with their families. The next day, the gates open again for the souls of the adults to join their loved ones on earth.
The mood of the holiday is very festive and joyful. The overall message is that we can celebrate the overall cycle of life and death in the sense that death does not mean an end.
I got the materials for our costumes courtesy of Value Village. I also got the flowers from Walmart. It was all super easy to put together. I hot glued the flowers onto little headbands and decorated the tops with rhinestones, skeleton hands, and flowers. The face makeup was pretty easy, but would look much better if I had professional quality face makeup and brushes. Overall, I think it turned out pretty well!
