I Relay For My Mom

relay

relayMy favorite event of the year is coming up this weekend and I could not be more excited for it. Before coming to college, I had never been involved with Relay for Life which baffles me since my life has been significantly impacted by cancer. 2013 was my first year participating, and I can honestly say it changed my life.

Relay for Life provides a beautiful opportunity to honor the lives of those we have lost, support those currently battling, and celebrate those who have overcome cancer. Even if your life specifically has not been impacted by cancer, it is an amazing way to show solidarity and support. There is nothing easy about having somebody you love struggle with this ugly disease – it is truly terrifying. Events like Relay give us hope. It shows us that we are not alone and shows those struggling with cancer that they have an incredible support system. If we all fight this together, we can someday find the cure to ending all cases of cancer.

If you would like to make a donation to my Relay for Life team, the link is here. Any support is greatly appreciated.

I would love to hear your story of how cancer has impacted your life or anything that has helped you get through this difficult time! Please leave a comment so that we can be supports to each other.

If you would like to hear a little bit more about my story, please keep reading!

As many of you may know, my mom has skin cancer. Throughout the years, I have seen her battle this disease with such ferocity, courage, and patience. As her cancer is very widespread, she usually has some sort of treatment for it at least every two months or so. Somehow, she still manages to hold a full-time position as a second grade teacher, make my family dinner every night, and take care of everybody else. She is completely selfless – putting our family’s needs before her own. From endless surgeries, radiation, and many other intensive treatments, she keeps a positive attitude. She pushes through hardly ever complaining, and it just blows me away.

Sometimes her surgeons will tell her she needs to be off her feet for a week after a particularly difficult surgery and I will find her bustling around the house doing laundry, cleaning, and cooking for our family just a few days later. While this drives me crazy because I want her to rest as much as possible, I am also incredibly inspired by it. I am in awe of her strength and bravery everyday.

I do not want to share too much information about how else cancer has effected me in my life, but I will say I have known many people who have lost their lives to it. Those losses have impacted my life and the lives of those I care about dramatically.

I relay for my mom, grandma, Dave, and Denise. Who do you relay for?

Wearable Festival Fashion

Wearable Festival Fashion

With the frenzy of Stagecoach and Coachella over, we gear up for another wave of concerts. The best thing about these festivals (besides the music) is the fashion.

Unfortunately, a lot of the high-fashion, boho, whimsical, or skimpy clothing that is perfectly normal at a festival is not really appropriate for day-to-day wear.

My beautiful little is my model today as she shows off some of her festival-esque clothes that she can rock almost anywhere!

Outfit of the Day: Yesterday, April 23rd

Outfit of the Day April 23

Outfit of the Day April 23
Yesterday I had the incredible privilege of managing Chapman University’s Twitter and Instagram during the annual “Spring Sizzle.” It was a blast – I felt so energized after. Opportunities like this remind me of how much I love social media especially for live events. I just really enjoy myself and feel very confident when I do it.

The one thing I did not feel confident about was my body. I really do not know what triggered this inside of me as I am usually very content with my body, but I guess I just had an off day. As I was settling in for the night to write this post and head to bed, a woman in my sorority shared this video on Facebook. I watched in awe as I was incredibly uplifted and inspired. I have included it at the bottom of this post for you to watch – I really hope you do! It is only about eight minutes long and will seriously make you feel beautiful and valued.

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day!

Printed Skirt & Allyssa from Life With Lyss

Print Skirts

Print SkirtsI am so excited about this collaboration with Allyssa from Life with Lyss! We both have adorable printed skirts from Charlotte Russe, so we decided to style them for this post. Allyssa was one of my first blogging friends and definitely somebody I look up to. I really encourage you all to check out her blog which features the best fashion and outfit inspiration – very classy and sweet!

I decided to actually show off two ways to style my tribal print skirt – from day to night. I kept it casual with the daytime look by adding a flowy white t-shirt, combat boots, and a chunky scarf. For night, I threw on a sexy black tank, some sky-high wedges, a bold statement necklace, and then some red-hot lipstick to top it all off.

Be sure to go onto Life with Lyss to see how she styled her floral printed skater skirt here!

Day to nightDayDayNight1Day to nightHere are some more pictures of how Allyssa styled her skirt! I love everything about it! The necklace she’s wearing is so gorgeous and it adds a nice pop of color. She looks stunning as always! See more pictures on her blog, Life with Lyss!

Etsy Favorites

vjs

If you’re familiar with my blog, you know that I love Etsy. I appreciate that it is a platform that artists can share their creations and profit from truly beautiful pieces. Sharing the stories of small business owners is one of my biggest joys. I have found a few of my favorite shops on Etsy like 8:38 Designs and Plum Paper (see my posts about them here and here).

I wanted to share two more favorites with you: Pure Impressions and Vintage Stamp Jewels.

Pure ImpressionsPure Impressions

Pure Impressions (website here) was created by Laura Hunter. Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, she now lives in Casper, Wyoming. Laura was such a sweetheart to send me the rings, bangles, and keychains pictured below! She loves creating handmade jewelry and says it is one of the most rewarding things you can do. She is also a full-time mom with a full-time job. I love stories like Laura’s because despite her extremely busy life, she still finds time to do what brings her the most joy – which in turn brings her customers joy! Not only will she work with you to create exactly what you want, she will also make and ship everything super fast.

I’ve loved working with her and highly recommend her store – it’s perfect for bridesmaids, graduation, wedding, and birthday gifts!

Follow Pure Impressions on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram!

Big, middle, little sis

Vintage Stamp Jewels was created by Monica, a stay-at-home mom of three. In her spare time, she loves to create this beautiful jewelry.  Her pieces are perfect for brides and bridesmaids.

I requested a layered necklace for my older sister who was recently engaged. The first layer of the necklace had a simple elegant heart and the second had her new initials “CLS.” My sister loved it so much.

Monica was so generous and threw in a stunning personalized ring for me as well. I wear it everyday and receive so many compliments on it. She is so accommodating and you can tell she genuinely cares about getting her customers exactly what they want.

Meeting Erin Condren

EC

Erin Condren and I

I had the incredible privilege of not only hearing Erin Condren speak yesterday, but also meeting her in person. For those of you who do not know who she is, Erin Condren is the mastermind behind an incredible stationary and home/office supply company called Erin Condren Designs. Essentially, all of the products aim at helping customers live a more organized life – enabling them to be more productive and happy.

I have been obsessed with their life planners for a long time now and have always wanted more Erin Condren products than I can afford. I knew Erin was a powerful voice for women – especially young professionals – but I did not fully grasp to what extent until I heard her speak at an event held by Chapman University’s Delta Gamma chapter and Panhellenic Council.

Erin started off her talk with a story about a “contract” her and her friend created in Spanish class in high school. The contract essentially explained that Erin vowed to be a successful business woman with an equally successful husband and two healthy children by the time she was in her mid-thirties. This contract came with a concrete promise – that she would give her friend $500 if this were not to come true.

I cracked up at this because it sounds like something I would do. I have this plan for myself. Without diving into too many personal details, I want to have a stable and successful career, be married to the man of my dreams, and hopefully have a few kids by the time I’m in my mid-thirties. That plan is a little intimidating considering that is only about ten to fifteen years down the road…yikes!

Anyways, Erin goes on to explain how sometimes life does not always go how we plan and although we may have one idea of how our life will turn out, something will usually happen to change the course of our lives no matter what. I have been going through a phase lately where I am questioning whether or not I should be going into public relations. Well, not really questioning that, more just wondering how I can use that to help others. I also have found a passion for bullying prevention and women’s empowerment, so I have been struggling with how I can channel those two passions into a career.

Erin discussed how when you start out in the real world after graduation, sometimes the work that you do is not always easy or fun. She explains that the key is to be a “sponge.” It is your job to use each experience – even the negative ones – to benefit your development and to truly soak up everything you are learning. You might have a terrible summer internship or a nasty boss, but you have to harness that experience and use it for something that will benefit you.

One of the things she also emphasized was that when she started her business, she did not have a business plan or all of the skills required to start a company. She stressed the importance of asking for help – finding people who have those skills that you may lack. There is no shame in seeking help from others because if you try to do everything on your own, you will fail. A key part of this is finding  a powerful life partner that will be supportive and encouraging of you. That is far down the line for me, but it is definitely good to keep in mind.

Erin said that “nobody plans to fail, they just fail to plan.” I agree with this because anybody can have a great idea about how they want to change the world – it takes a certain person with a specific plan and enough determination to actually execute that idea in a successful and influential way.

As somebody with an entrepreneurial heart looking to start my own business and pave my own path, Erin’s story was incredibly encouraging. I felt relieved that I did not have everything planned out yet. I felt comforted by her story and humble beginnings. It gave me hope and encouraged me to think that maybe, just maybe, my dreams are not as scary as I think they are.

Between her clear joy in what she does and inspiring story, I am just blown away by Erin. I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to hear her speak and meet her. I hope to one day be as gracious, successful, genuine, giving, and humble as she is.

Erin, if you ever read this (I would be so honored if you did!), I hope you know how much you have impacted me. Thank you for inspiring me and being an incredible example of a strong and powerful woman with a kind heart. I am forever grateful and genuinely hope our paths cross again soon. Until then, I will continue to write down my every task in my trusty planner. I am also much more productive and successful when I have an action-packed schedule and as cheesy as it sounds, your life planners have seriously changed the way I organize myself. I’m so sorry for completely fangirling over you. I just really appreciate everything you have done to encourage me. Thank you for everything, Erin!

Ultimate Guide to Formal Dress Shopping Online

Formal Dress Shopping

Formal Dress Shopping

It’s the best time of the year: FORMAL SEASON! That’s right! Whether you’re in a sorority or plan on getting yourself invited to a fraternity’s formal, this is your ultimate guide to finding the perfect dress online at an affordable price (tips, tricks, and favorite stores).

Here are some rules of thumb:
  • Look at the size chart every time and actually know your measurements. You won’t know how the dress will fit until you actually try it on, but this is the best way you can guestimate
  • Check the store’s return and exchange policy – many require you to pay postage. Look for stores (like the ones listed below) that offer free returns and exchanges.
  • Try to find stores with free shipping or discounts for first-time users
  • Google search coupons and promo codes for that store (RetailMeNot.com always has great ones!)
  • See if any sisters/friends want to buy with you if there’s a large shipping fee

tobi logo

Tobi is GREAT! This is my #1 recommendation by far. I ordered my semi-formal dress from here along with another dress as a backup. Not only did they ship incredibly fast (within a week!), but the dresses were such high quality. I love Tobi because they have something for everybody – from super scandalous cut-out dresses to modest work-appropriate dresses.

The main reason I ordered through them was because they offer free returns and exchanges. Also, they offer 50% off your first order AND free shipping! You just can’t get a better deal than that.

I do have to say though, their dresses do run small. I am usually a size small/medium in dresses, so I ordered a medium to be on the safe side. My dress was skin tight – which was fine, just not what I had anticipated. I would recommend ordering a size up. Worst case scenario, you can exchange it for free for the smaller size!

Nordstrom LogoI will always stand by Nordstrom. With free shipping and free returns, you know they are dependable. They are known throughout the industry to have the highest quality and customer service.

Mod Cloth

ModCloth is another super cute online shop with free returns and exchanges. Their dresses are unlike any you will see. If you buy a formal dress from here, I doubt anybody else at your formal will have the same one!

urban-outfitters-logoWho knew Urban Outfitters had free returns and exchanges? Not me! They have super cute dress options as well especially if you’re going for the more boho look (I’m looking at you, Little!)
