10 Songs Guaranteed to Put a Smile on Your Face

10 songs.jpg

As the school year comes to a close, the reality of transferring schools has really hit me. The past few days have been incredibly hard as I have tried to put on a strong face for my friends. Although I am beyond excited for this new chapter in my life and am confident in my decision, it doesn’t make saying goodbye any easier.

In this difficult time, I’ve found comfort in music. While I write my blog posts, study for finals, or am packing up, I’ve been trying to play music that is good for my soul.

If you’re having a hard time right now or just want to listen to some music with uplifting messages, I recommend checking out these songs! I hope they help you as they’ve helped me or at the very least, put a smile on your face. Have a very happy Friday!

Outfit of the Day: May 15th

How freakin’ adorable is this dress from Charlotte Russe? I’m actually OBSESSED with it! It’s exactly my style – shows off my small waist, hides my curvier lower half, and is modest without being suffocating. It’s such a classic look and then the leather adds a little modern edge to it. I paired it with red-ish/raspberry lipstick and my favorite sunglasses from Nordstrom. The whole look has a bit of a 50s vibe to it!

I also parted my hair differently, I don’t know if you can tell. I’m trying out new parts since I’ll be chopping off about two inches in a few weeks (eek!). I’m not sure I like this off-center look though. What do you think?

I wore this to my last day working in Chapman’s Alumni Relations department. I definitely cried since it was my last day…oh gosh, I’m tearing up now! I had such an incredible time managing the alumni social media for the university and learned so much. I hate saying goodbye so much. It’s really, really hard, especially since I’ve been working there for a year. My boss was so kind at took me to this amazing pizza place as a last hurrah. I will miss working there dearly.

Study Session Survival Guide

study session copy

“HOORAY! It’s finals season, my favorite!” – said no one ever.

Yeah, finals stink. I think the worst part about finals is just the boredom. Time seems to move so slowly when you’re stuck indoors and staring at a screen or textbook for hours on end. I definitely struggle with staying awake and focused during long study sessions, but I’ve found some tricks to help me keep on track!

Drink Constantly

Water, not alcohol. Calm down, guys. Seriously though, when you’re hydrated you will feel so much more alert. When you find your eyes glazing over or mind getting foggy, swap out that energy drink or soda for a big glass of H2O.

Take Breaks

For every 30 minutes of uninterrupted studying, take a 5-10 minute break. Doing these short bursts of  studying/resting/studying/resting will help you last much longer. Think of it like exercise – you build up stamina  better by pacing yourself. This is a marathon people, not a sprint.

Have Healthy Snacks

I’m guilty of binging on a whole bag of gummy bears while studying late at night. While I told myself eating this sugary snack kept me awake and focused, it really made me feel horrible in the long-run. Instead of munching on junk, find a healthy alternative. Swap Cheetos for pretzels, gummy worms for carrots, ice cream for peanut butter and celery, etc. You’ll feel much fuller and satisfied – your brain and stomach will thank you.

By no means do you have to completely deprive yourself of sweets – I highly recommend “rewarding” yourself every once in a while for working so hard!

Get Fresh Air

The library, your room, or wherever you’re studying can get awfully stuffy. When you take your 5-10 minute breaks, try to walk outside for a bit. Stretching your legs and filling your lungs with fresh air will help you feel rejuvenated.

Listen to Some Good Tunes

While it’s tempting to listen to our favorite pump-up songs or even some calming acoustic stuff, listening to music with words can be extremely distracting. Even if we’re zoning it out a bit, our brain is still working as it listens to each word being sung. You’ll find yourself singing along without even knowing it. This kind of multitasking is detrimental.

On the other hand, I find it maddening to have complete silence – sometimes it’s even more distracting! So instead of jamming out to my favorite songs or sitting in utter silence, I play instrumental music. You can listen to instrumental covers of your favorite songs (trust me, you’d be surprised how many piano covers there are of “Gas Pedal” I kid you not).

Personally, I like listening to playlists like this or this while studying. Check out 8tracks.com – you can type in keywords like “instrumental” or “chill” and tons of pre-made playlists will pop up!

Make a To-Do List

This will help you stay on track with the tasks you have. It may seem a lot at first once you write it all out, but it will be so satisfying to check every item off the list.

What are your favorite study session tips?

Formal

This past weekend was my final formal with the Eta Sigma chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta. (I will be transferring to the Alpha Sigma chapter in the fall at Washington State University) Very bittersweet, it was still a really fun event! I took my best friend, Selina as my date (taking your best friend is way less stressful than taking a guy!)

I’m wearing my favorite dress from TexasRoots Boutique, super cute wedges from Shop Hope’s (use the discount LYSSLIFEREP for 10% off your order at Hope’s!), and a statement necklace from Forever 21. I also have my amazing Luxy Hair extensions in!

Flashback Friday: A Look Back at April

Look back at April

April went by so fast! I cannot believe it is May and I have two weeks of school left…it doesn’t seem real. I wanted to take today to reflect on the past month.

Favorite Moments in April
  1. Meeting Erin Condren and having her actually comment on my blog post! See it all here.
  2. Receiving an amazing care package from Charlotte Russe. See posts featuring the items from the care package here and here.
  3. Being featured on Charlotte Russe’s Instagram here.
  4. Stepping up my sponsorship opportunities and filling all of my sponsor spots.
  5. Collaboration with Allyssa from Life with Lyss. See it here.
  6. Reaching 900 followers on Twitter.
  7. Being published on the TEDxChapmanU blog here.
  8. My little sister committed to attending the University of Puget Sound in the Fall!
  9. My older sister decided on a wedding venue and date

It’s been a great month! I have so much going on in May – moving from California back to Washington, final exams, saying goodbye to all of my Chapman friends, and formal. I am excited, nervous, sad, stressed, and so happy all at the same time. It’s going to be a roller coaster for sure.

What were your favorite moments in April?

Outfit of the Day: May 6th

Outfit of the day May 6th

Outfit of the day May 6th I have always been afraid of wearing a baggy shirt combined with a flowy skirt because I thought it would look boxy. However, I really love how this look came together. It is casual and comfy with a little bit of an edgy side. I am also wearing my brand new Luxy Hair extensions which I am IN LOVE with. I will be posting a review and video later in the week about them so stay tuned.

Outfit of the Day: Yesterday, May 1st

Outfit of the Day May 1

Yesterday was another day of 90+ degree heat and Santa Ana winds. Since skirts were out of the question and there was no way I could bring myself to wear pants, I threw on this adorable high-waisted skort from Forever 21. I paired it with a flowy crop top (also from Forever 21), and a crisp blazer from Target. A super chic business casual look, I did not overheat or have a Marilyn Monroe moment.

My Natural Hair

Natural Hair

I can honestly say I am addicted to my hair extensions and well, my hair in general. If my hair does not look perfect, I feel like I’m having an off day. That being said, I have been trying really hard to embrace my natural hair lately. With the help of DevaCurl “no-poo” and conditioner, I have been able to fully embrace my mess of curls.

I wore my hair natural for the first time in a while yesterday and received so many compliments – I was shocked. Floored, actually. I could not believe that people loved something I was most self-conscious about! Sometimes, you have to just embrace your natural beauty and it will pay off big time. I’ve never felt more confident about my hair!

I encourage every woman reading this to think about what you are most self-conscious about your appearance. What do you do to alter it? Can you challenge yourself for ONE day to leave yourself 100% completely natural? I know it’s scary, but I think you will be surprised at how amazing you feel.

I love getting dolled up just as much as the next girl, trust me. It is just nice to take a break every once in a while to reflect.

Comment below if you challenged yourself to be “au naturale” or what your absolute FAVORITE aspect of your appearance is! ♥
